Effects of E-cigarettes on Saliva and Oral Epithelium (ECG)

The General and Oral Health Center is currently recruiting participants for a research study looking at the effects of e-cigarettes on the oral cavity. If you qualify to be in the study, participation will include 1 study visit that lasts about 1.5 hours. The study visit will take place in the GO Health Center, located within the UNC School of Dentistry.

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • Are 18-40 years old
  • Are a non-smoker
  • Are generally healthy
  • Do not require antibiotics prior to dental treatment
  • Are a current e-cigarette user with No previous (within the past 6 months) or current tobacco usage
  • Are a current cigarette user with NO previous (within the past 6 months) or current e-cigarette usage

Participants that complete this study will receive $75.00 and free parking vouchers.

IL 29 & IL28B Variants (KTM)

We are currently recruiting participants for a study involving how certain proteins affect periodontal status. If you qualify to be in the study, participation will include 7 visits over a 35-day period. All visits will be carried out at the General and Oral Health Center, located within the UNC School of Dentistry.

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • are 25 year-old or older
  • are a non-smoker
  • are generally healthy
  • do not require antibiotics prior to dental treatment
  • have at least 20 teeth

Participants that complete this study will receive up to $240.00, free dental cleaning, and free parking vouchers for each visit.

Genetic Research Study: IL-37 (ITS)

The GO Health Center is currently recruiting participants for a study investigating a new anti-inflammatory protein and its role in the oral cavity.

Upon qualifying to participate, 1-9 visits scheduled over a 6-month period to the GO Health Center, located within the UNC School of Dentistry, will be required. Subject samples, such as saliva, dental plaque, gingival crevicular fluid, and blood will be collected with participation in the study. Gingival tissue biopsies may be taken as part of this study; however, the subject has the choice to opt out of this procedure.

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • are a Caucasian between the ages of 18 and 65
  • have 20 teeth, excluding wisdom teeth
  • do not have chronic disease with oral manifestations, including diabetes mellitus
  • do not require antibiotics prior to dental treatment
  • are not pregnant or planning a pregnancy within the next several months

Participants that complete this study will receive a free dental examination and cleaning, free parking vouchers for each visit, a $30.00 gift card for each blood sample (maximum of 4), and $150.00 for participating in an optional gum tissue biopsy.

Dental Composite Research Study

Participants with dental cavities in their back teeth are needed for a research study.

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • Are 18 years of age and older
  • Have cavities in the posterior (back) teeth
  • Do not have Dry Mouth, Sjogren’s Syndrome or Periodontal disease

Participation in this research study will require 7 visits (over a 5 year period) to the General & Oral Health Center, located in the UNC School of Dentistry. You may be eligible to receive two free dental restorations (fillings) and up to $250 for successful study completion.
